Privacy Policy for Offhours
Offhours ("the Extension") is designed with a privacy-first architecture[cite: 1]. All time tracking, domain blocking, and usage analytics occur directly within your browser[cite: 1]. We do not track, collect, store, or transmit your personal data or browsing activity to any external servers or third parties[cite: 1].
1. What Data Is Processed and Stored
To provide time limits, downtime schedules, and usage charts, the Extension stores information locally on your device using standard Chrome APIs[cite: 1]:
A. Extension Settings & Configuration
- What is stored: Your custom domain rules, time limits, downtime schedules, sort preferences, and total usage view modes[cite: 1].
- Where it is stored:
chrome.storage.sync[cite: 1]. - How it is used: Saved configuration syncs across Chrome browsers where you are signed in with the same Google Account[cite: 1]. This data is strictly managed by Google Chrome and is never sent to us[cite: 1].
B. Usage History
- What is stored: The time spent (in seconds) on websites visited while using Chrome[cite: 1].
- Where it is stored:
chrome.storage.localon your local device[cite: 1]. - Data Minimization & Compaction:
- Detailed History: Exact per-domain usage is kept for the current day to enforce limits[cite: 1].
- Historical Compaction: At the end of each day, usage for non-configured websites is aggregated into a single generic bucket (
__other)[cite: 1]. The specific domains of unconfigured sites you visited on previous days are permanently discarded[cite: 1]. - Retention: Usage history is stored for a maximum of 3,700 days (~10 years) to power your local usage charts and is subject to an automatic local storage cap of 8 MB (evicting oldest records first)[cite: 1].
C. Temporary Session Data
- What is stored: Temporary states such as active "Snooze" durations[cite: 1].
- Where it is stored:
chrome.storage.session[cite: 1]. - How it is used: This data is ephemeral and is cleared automatically when the browser restarts[cite: 1].
2. Remote Servers & Analytics
- No External Servers: Offhours does not operate external databases, analytical servers, or tracking endpoints[cite: 1].
- No Telemetry / No Tracking: We do not track which sites you visit, how long you use the extension, or your personal identification details[cite: 1].
- No Third-Party Advertising: We do not display ads, sell data, or integrate third-party ad networks[cite: 1].
3. Data Export and Portability
You own your data[cite: 1]. You can export your full local usage history at any time as a .csv file via the Export data option located on the extension's Options page[cite: 1].
4. How to Delete Your Data
Because all data resides locally on your browser:
- Removing a site: Deleting a configured site from your settings clears its distinct historical data during the next daily compaction[cite: 1].
- Uninstalling the extension: Uninstalling Offhours instantly deletes all local storage, settings, and browsing history managed by the extension[cite: 1].
- Clearing browser data: You can also manually clear extension storage through Chrome's native developer tools or site data settings[cite: 1].
5. Permissions Justification
Offhours requests permissions through the Chrome Extension Manifest solely to fulfill its core features[cite: 1]:
storage: Used to save your options and local time usage records[cite: 1].idle: Used to pause active time tracking when you are away from your computer[cite: 1].alarms: Used to trigger daily background maintenance (such as resetting daily limits at midnight and compacting history)[cite: 1].tabs/webNavigation/ Active Tab Access: Used to detect the current domain, display time remaining on the extension badge, and redirect blocked tabs to the block page[cite: 1].
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect updates to the extension. Any updates will be reflected with a revised "Effective Date" at the top of this page.
